The man's car was detected doing 174km/h in a 110km/h zone on the Hume Freeway by Wodonga Highway Patrol officers conducting speed checks about 9.10pm.
"The vehicle then hit an 80km/h zone and allegedly made no effort to slow down despite the wet conditions," a police spokeswoman said.
Police checked the man's registration and discovered it had expired while the vehicle's front two tyres were unroadworthy.
"He is expected to be charged on summons with speed dangerous, unregistered vehicle, excessive speed and driving an unroadworthy vehicle," the spokeswoman said.
"His vehicle was also impounded for 30 days at the cost of $1115."

This impound formed part of Operation Nexus, a Victorian operation aiming to reduce road trauma, including the number of lives lost and injuries on the roads.
Victoria Police said during this time motorists could expect to be breath tested and drug tested, have their vehicles scanned and be checked for speeding.
The operation, which continues until 11.59pm on Monday, involves all available personnel including local road policing units, general duties, other operational policing units and centralised resources from Road Policing Command.
