Albury officers spotted the 31-year-old in a stolen car on McDonald Road about 9.20pm on Thursday.
They tried to stop the black Ford Falcon, but the man accelerated towards Kemp Street.
The vehicle, which had been stolen across the border on March 25, crashed into a traffic signal pole at the intersection of Kemp Street and Kaitlers Road.

The driver fled the scene but was arrested in the rear yard of a Kemp Street home.
A search of the vehicle led to a backpack with tools for breaking into homes being discovered.
The 31-year-old was the only person in the vehicle and was not injured in the crash.
He was taken to Albury Police Station and charged with police pursuit, disqualified driving, driving a stolen car and unlawfully possessing false plates.
He will return to court on Tuesday and will remain in custody.
