The Mayday Hills Art Society is running the 'Beechworth art competition for kids' with a focus on the town's growth during its 1800s mining boom.
Vice President Wendy Stephens said there were participants as far as Ballarat and Sydney.
"We're asking them to find a photo of a building, and perhaps make a drawing or a poem, and give us a few words about the building," she said.
"A few people in Beechworth have kindly donated some money for prizes, so we have over $600 in prize money for the kids who enter."
The society would have presented a new exhibition with the Golden Horseshoes Festival, which was cancelled due to COVID-19.
"Last week we would have been down at the Memorial Hall working on Arts of Gold," Ms Stephens said.
"We thought now was a perfect opportunity to set up an arts competition.
"This gives them a project and also highlights the heritage of Beechworth - all of the buildings have stories.
"You have the post office, and the Ned Kelly story with the court house and also the old facade of the hospital.
