Twizere Nyiratingabandi's funeral service was held in Wodonga today following her death on the night of April 4.
Emergency services were called to her Peeler Street home, where she was found dead.
A 21-year-old woman was taken into custody but was released, and police yesterday said the investigation was ongoing.
Limited details of the incident have been released and no-one has been charged.
More than 600 people viewed a live stream of the service from the Radcliffe funeral home, with a small number of people physically at the service.
The 43-year-old was from the Congo and migrated from a refugee camp in Uganda.
Family friend Bigero Jeah Bosco said she had married in November 1996 and was a mother.
She had moved to Australia about 15 months ago, he said.
Pastor Jason Mannering gave his sympathies to her family for their loss.
"Death can be a very confusing time for everyone, especially for children," he said.
"I want you to know that I see you, we see you and that we love you.
"And so first of all to the children, I want you to know that your mother is in a very special place."
Pastor Mannering said it would be wrong to sugarcoat her death.
"Her life was tragically taken from her," he said.
"The way that Twizere passed is not OK.
"Twizere was murdered .... the victim of an evil, brutal and commandment-breaking act, and we pray and we believe that swift justice will be done soon.
"It's in times like these that human words fall short."
A small number of friends and family gathered at Wodonga Cemetery after the service for Ms Nyiratingabandi's burial.
