Wodonga Council has come under renewed fire for its handling of the hills strategy from the pressure group set up to safeguard the hills' environmental values.

In the lead-up to the council providing an update on the hills strategy at its meeting on Monday, Protect Wodonga Hills Facebook page posted: "If local government ever needed an example of 'what not to do' to build community ownership and trust, Wodonga Council has set the gold standard."
It also lists what it believes have been council mis-steps.

They include voting down a move by Cr Brian Mitchell to call on the Local Government Minister to investigate the entire hills strategy process, with the casting vote of mayor Anna Speedie.
Also, works commencing before any consultation and funds spent under officer delegation in 2015 and 2016, trails created and works undertaken without proper approvals and environmental assessment, and ignoring three petitions asking council to stop.
Meanwhile, the council is advancing the creation of a climb track on Klings Hill and a car park on Crown land on Felltimber Creek Road, which needs the approval of Department of Environment Land Water and Planning.
The council agenda states: "The environmental assessment for both sites confirms there are no significant constraints for design and construction of either project".
The assessments were carried out by consultants, but reports have not been made public to date.
"The tender documentation is prepared and ready for advertisement, but will only be done once the community have been advised of these pending works as per the council resolution," the agenda states.
