Albury Council staff have recommended the ground be known as Lavington Stadium Albury once the $19.6 million redevelopment is completed later this year.
"They've got to put Albury in there because no one knows where Lavington is in their eyes," he said.
"I would like to see it stay as Lavington Sports Ground which it has been known as from day dot. Having Albury in there is not needed.
"Everyone will be going to the Ovens and Murray grand final at Lavi. Everybody knows where it is."
The venue naming will be decided at a council meeting tonight with the option of Albury-Wodonga Stadium being discarded by staff.
The council has had to previously include Albury in bids for AFL pre-season matches, Asian Cup soccer and Big Bash cricket due to Lavington being not as well known as Albury.
Mr Wetmore said the COVID-19 outbreak meant top level sport won't be played at the venue for up to five years.
"If we had of lost Lavington from the name it would be gone forever," he said.
"It's like selling the family farm. Once it's gone, it's gone and you never get it back.
"People would be up in arms if it got changed."

In his report, the council's leisure facilities team leader Michael Stanton said the proposed name recognised community sentiment and would identify the facility in the wider market.
"It reinforces its strategic location in Albury, NSW and fulfils all the requirements to support and strengthen the appeal of regional, national and international event bids," he said.
Brian Chalmers, who was president of Lavington Football Netball Club when it entered the Ovens and Murray league, has also campaigned for Lavington to be retained in the ground's name post the redevelopment.
"I think it is a bit sneaky popping the Albury name in," he said.
"But I'm very, very pleased the Lavington name has been retained and I cannot understand why it can't just be called Lavington Stadium.
"Enough people know the Lavington ground has been used for AFL, soccer, different cricket matches and they know where Lavington is."
