Incumbent hosts Kylie King and Kev Poulton are to set to take over the noon to 3pm Monday to Friday slot.

Warrnambool duo Sean Cullen and Kate Meade, whose early morning program is already networked on Wangaratta's 3NE and Deniliquin's 2QN, will now also be heard through 2AY.

Ace Radio, which owns all those stations, also airs the pair's Morning Rush on its other AM outlets in Victoria.

Ace chief executive Mark Taylor, a former 2AY station manager, said the change would occur in the next three to six weeks.

"We're not taking them off breakfast for any cost-saving measure, we're putting them on afternoons to complete the radio station (talk line-up)," Mr Taylor said.

Currently the noon to 3pm period is the only weekday slot filled with music, with Melbourne broadcasters Neil Mitchell, Tom Elliott, Gerard Healy and Denis Walter relayed from 3AW at other times.

Existing 2AY afternoon host Dave Brunton will stay and still be heard on sister broadcaster Edge FM.

The end of an Albury-based breakfast show marks a major change for the Border's oldest radio station which debuted in 1930.

Past hosts include Laurie Henry, who created a traffic jam with an April Fool's Day joke suggesting a Concorde was landing in Albury, Luisa Pelizzari, now heard on Triple M breakfast, and Sandra Moon who hosts ABC Goulburn Murray early mornings.

Asked if he thought there would be a backlash to not having a Border-based breakfast show, Mr Taylor said: "I think we'll get a reasonable reaction, it's a very good show and Kylie and Kev will still be on."

Mr Taylor said a "local window" would enable banter with newsreader Paul McSwiney and segments once heard on the Border show such as radio scattergories, sport with Tony Leonard and entertainment with Peter Ford would appear.

Mr Taylor said COVID-19 had hurt adverts with a salesman retrenched last week.

"We're desperate to get going with the local footy," he said of one station cash cow.

The station has had no Ovens and Murray matches to call due to the virus.
