Eleven contenders have emerged to stand in the seat of Eden-Monaro at a by-election on July 4 that was prompted by the resignation of Labor incumbent Mike Kelly.
His Liberal opponent at last year's general election Fiona Kotvojs is recontesting the seat and earlier this week visited Tumbarumba.
She said it was apparent the recovery from bushfires that devastated the region's timber sector was a major concern.
"One of the key things is around jobs, the forestry industry has been badly affected by fires and we need to make sure we have a robust long-term industry and we need to look at how we support that," Dr Kotvojs said.
Being part of the Rural Fire Service and having had fire come within 20 metres of her farm buildings on the south coast, Dr Kotvojs expressed empathy for those suffering.

"I know what it was like, with the bushfires our farm was burnt," she said.
"I know what's it's like to defend your property, I know what it's like to come back and see fences damaged."
Dr Kotvojs rejected the label of climate change denier, which has been based on an article she wrote last year for The Australian Financial Review questioning whether it was the greatest threat facing Pacific islands.
"My position is really clear, I believe the climate is changing and I believe humans are contributing to that change," she said.
However, asked what she thought of government backbencher Matt Canavan's call to abandon the Paris climate agreement Dr Kotvojs declined to offer a view.
Her central pitch to voters is that she can deliver by being in government.
Labor candidate Kristy McBain, a former Bega Valley mayor, is the favourite for the seat, while her council colleague Cathy Griff is standing for the Greens.
The Nationals plan to run but are yet to name a hopeful.
Nominations to stand close next Tuesday.
