The total rainfall of 24.8mm in Wangaratta was less than half the average and the driest since 19.8mm in May 2015.
The mean maximum temperature of 16.0 was nearly two degrees below normal. This made it the coldest in May since 15.9 in May 2000.
It was the coldest autumn since 1995, and Deniliquin recorded its coldest May since 1970.
It was a different situation in southern Victoria, where many towns were swamped by above average rainfall for the fifth month in succession.
Melbourne had 467.6mm to the end of May, just short of the 1911 record of 472.9mm. Other very wet January to May periods in Melbourne were 447mm in 1841, 430mm in 1924 and 1973 and just over 400mm in 1900 and 1970.
Many outer eastern suburbs like Scoresby and Berwick have had more than 600mm, the wettest ever recorded.
Melbourne and some suburbs had their coldest May since 1970. This June has started off being the coldest since 1943 and the third coldest start in 165 years of record.
The other colder June 1 was back in 1862.
It has been very dry along the South Coast on NSW. Bega, with only 1.4mm, had its driest May since 1982.
But not that far away, Gabo Island with 96mm and Mallacoota with 113mm enjoyed their wettest May for 10 years.
It appears that Tasmania had less colder and wetter days last month than Victoria. Hobart had its driest May since 2008 with only 15.8mm.
The mean maximum temperature of 15.5 was more than one degree above the May normal.
It was the 14th successive May in Hobart which turned out warmer than usual, although a few years were a fraction above normal.
The first two days of June in north east Victoria were cold and bleak, but not as cold as 1943 and 1949.
A strong high-pressure has appeared on the synoptic charts south of the bight.
The central pressure of 1035mm, very high and slow moving and may split into two separate centres which will prevent any strong frontal systems invading our region for at least the next week.
This will result in a lengthy spell of frosts and fogs, the temperature falling to about minus 4 degrees.
