Wodonga brothers Paddy and Ryan Lalor are two of the region's rising stars in mountain bike racing.

Ryan, 13, has recently had the bragging rights after claiming his maiden downhill national title in the under-15s at the Mountain Bike Australia National Championships at Bright in March.

Paddy competed in the under-17s category and placed 13th behind eventual winner Ollie Davis, of Albury.

"We push each other a bit, especially now that he's starting to beat me," Paddy laughed.

"We race together at pretty much all the events.

"We're in different age groups at the moment, but last year we rode in the same category which was pretty cool. Sometimes Ryan beats me, sometimes I beat him."

Paddy, 15, was introduced to the sport by a friend and Ryan was quick to follow suit and both have had plenty of success.

The pair also ride in the enduro category and enjoy the challenge of racing in two vastly different disciplines.

Late last year, Ryan finished second at the Gravity Enduro event in Tasmania and carried that form into the downhill at Bright.

Incredibly, he won the high-speed event racing on an endurance bike.

"It surprised me because it was one of my first big downhill races," Ryan said.

"I was second in seedings and snapped my derailleur, so I knew I had a bit more in it. It was good for me mentally knowing I could push more and already be in a good position."

Like so many sports across the region, mountain bike racing has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the majority of season's final events cancelled.

Paddy and Ryan are itching to get back into competitive riding, but have made the most of the break by spending every spare second at Wodonga's Hunchback Mountain Bike Park.

"We missed out on a couple of events at the end of the season that got cancelled, but luckily I've been able to ride with Ryan and keep training," Paddy said.

"We do a lot of work with The Fastline Bikademy (TFB). Indi Boer coaches us in summer and the longer days after school.

"We do training twice a week with her in strength and skill training.

"We just want to ride as much as we can."

Paddy and Ryan both want to progress as far as they can in the sport and one day ride internationally, much like Yackandandah brothers Olly and Ben Zwar, who are now representing Sweden.

The Zwar brothers have been big supporters of the Lalor boys, helping them out with coaching and riding equipment.

Racing season typically starts in September, but a lot of events are yet to be confirmed.
