Another driver travelling to the town for work found the man's Mitsubishi Mirage on Walla Road, about three kilometres east of Walla, about 5.30am on Tuesday.
Emergency services were called but the man had died at the scene.
The vehicle was extensively damaged and appeared to have hit the tree head-on while travelling west.
It came to a stop in a paddock, a short distance from the tree, with the front end pushed into the vehicle.
The Walla man, 46, is yet to be formally identified.
Detective Acting Inspector Chris Wallace said the passerby had found the car only a short time after the crash.
"It's one of our locals," he said of the late man.
"It's a terrible thing.
"Our thoughts go out to his family and members of the community who may know this person.
"We will look at all avenues as to how it may have come about, which will be provided to the coroner."
There were no witnesses to the crash, but police are keen to speak to anyone with information or dashcam footage.
The man who found the damaged car said it was a complete wreck.
He believed it must have hit the tree at high speed.
The impact stripped bark off the tree and detached one of the car's wheels.
Detective Acting Inspector Wallace said initial investigations suggested it was only a "matter of minutes" after the crash that the vehicle was discovered.
"It hasn't been there that long," he said.
The damaged car was towed from the scene about four hours after the crash.
Police and firefighters attended the scene.
Detective Acting Inspector Wallace urged drivers to stay safe on the road.
"People just need to slow down, drive to the conditions, and not drink and drive," he said.
The incident came at the end of the long weekend.
Police reported an increase in traffic amid the easing of restrictions implemented to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
NSW has a lower road toll in 2020 compared to statistics up to the same time last year with an 18 per cent reduction.
Victoria's road toll has also reduced by more than 28 per cent.
