This looks set to continue, as we are facing the coldest winter since 1966.
Over the long weekend, there was widespread frost and fog.
Fog persisted for most of the day at some places. Narrandera recorded a maximum temperature of only 7.8 degrees, the coldest June day there since 7.2 in 1989.
Hay recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.5 degrees, the lowest temperature for early June in 112 years.
Hay had completed its coldest autumn since 1956 and the second-coldest autumn in 140 years of records.
Other cold autumns at Hay were in 1909, 1931, 1944, 1946 and 1983. None of those winters were warmer than usual in north east Victoria.
The warmest days tended to be the last week of July and first week of August.
Rainfall tended to close to average; the heaviest rains were late June and the third and fourth week of August; the coldest days around July 15-17. It snowed in Wangaratta during this period in 1966.
Katoomba recorded its lowest mean minimum of 4 degrees for May since 1917.
Many other alpine centres have had similar readings for May and this has continued to well into June.
Frosts have occurred as far north as Roma in Queensland.
The west coast of Western Australia have enjoyed warm days, up to 30 at Carnarvon on June 3.
This well-above normal warmth is not likely to reach our area.
The approaching low pressure trough now over Western Australia will turn the winds more northerly later this week in our area, resulting in a couple of days with maximum about a degree or two above normal.
This low pressure will be weakening as it crosses the Bight, and only light rainfalls in our area is expected.
A return to more frosts and fogs is anticipated by mid-June.
Both Melbourne and Adelaide recording their coldest morning for early June since 1989.
We had a very cold winter in 1989, with slightly more rain than usual; the heaviest falls the third week of June and the fourth week of August.
August 1989 was the coldest August on record in Wangaratta - the mean maximum temperature was 12.2.
