Punkfish - dubbed fish and chips with attitude - offers the likes of Johnny Rotten (fish burger); Iggy (beer-battered flathead and housemade potato cake); and Blondie (prawn tacos with slaw and lime aioli).
Canvas Eatery owner Tim Tehan said the concept for the popup restaurant had been in the pipeline since January.
Mr Tehan said the coronavirus crisis had put it on the backburner until recently when it opened three nights a week to complement the return of Canvas' day trade.
"We thought Punkfish would resonate with people who had their childhoods in the 1970s," he said.

Mr Tehan, whose first restaurant was Fitzroy dining icon Birdman Eating, said Punkfish offered diners a different spin on fish and chips.
"It's fish and chips with a healthier twist; we've got grilled salmon and ancient grain or slaw salads," he said.
Located behind MAMA, Punkfish is open Thursday to Saturday, 5pm to 8pm.
