Macgyver's Me Mate notched his first career win at Albury last month and steps-up in grade in the $20,000 Class One Hcp, (1400m).
The four-year-old gelding is an equine giant and at 17.2 hands is one of the biggest horses racing in the Riverina.
"The horse is going along really well at the moment," Maclean said.
"He is a massive horse and is 17.2 hands but he is probably not as big to look at as some other horses of similar size because he has got such a high wither on him.
"He is a gentle giant most of the time but he can get full of himself and knows he is over 17 hands and doesn't mind throwing his weight around.
"But he hasn't go a mean bone in his body and while he is a gentle giant he is a tough horse on the race track.
"He is easily one of the toughest horses I have trained and it's very hard to know when he is feeling sore so when he is you know it's something out of the ordinary."
Macgyver's Me Mate is lightly raced and has only had three previous starts.
He ran third on debut at Wagga in January before Maclean was forced to spell his big galloper with niggling issues.
Macgyver's Me Mate got nabbed right on the line when resuming from an 18-week spell at Albury last month.
He made amends the following start and notched his first career win with a strong display also at Albury.
In-form hoop Brodie Loy has been aboard in all three runs and sticks with the horse again.
"Being such a big horse he always has had a few niggling issues," he said.
"But once we got him right he has shown what he is capable off.
"He finished second at Albury first-up from a spell the horse has just improved and got better and better.
"He had a few issues when he ran third on debut at Wagga so we had to put him out after just the one start.
"The tracks are that little bit softer at this time of year which also helps him."

Maclean said although he steps-up in grade from a maiden he expected Macgyver's Me Mate to be fighting out the finish with a bit of luck.
"It looks another winnable race for him but he has got a tricky gate to overcome," he said.
"Being a big horse he doesn't like to be cluttered up in the field on the rail
"Today is a lot bigger field compared to last start when he was able to get off the rail fairly easily.
"Despite the draw hopefully he can settle in a forward spot.
"But I'll leave the tactics up to Brodie because he knows what he's doing."
