The alleged victim had concerns Joel Breewel would be bailed following his arrest at the Twin City Motor Inn in the early hours of Wednesday.
The Wodonga Magistrates Court heard he had headbutted her, thrown her onto a bed, put one hand around her neck and another over her mouth and pushed her, causing her to hit her head on a wall.
She had been on a video call to her niece at the time and Breewel allegedly smashed her phone.
He had drunk 15 Victoria Bitters and spirits at the motel in the lead up to the incident, the court heard.

The argument started when Breewel told the woman he wanted to go to his mate's home to drink more.
He left and allegedly attacked her when he returned.
He was taken to hospital after his arrest, having used a glass he had allegedly thrown against a wall to deeply cut his wrist.
The alleged victim has a court order out against Breewel, which he has previously breached.
"She's quite concerned about the accused being granted bail and is looking for a full intervention order to protect her," Leading Senior Constable Kylie Clarkson said.
The court heard Breewel is a registered sex offender, daily cannabis user, and has an alcohol problem which he would be withdrawing from in custody.
He was on a corrections order for offences against the same victim at the time of the alleged attack.
Magistrate Ian Watkins pointed to Breewel's history when denying his release application.
The matter will return on July 2.
