Police have arrested an agitated man armed with a knife in Wangaratta after he made threats to stab them.

The man came to police attention near the Caltex on Rowan Street about 4.30am on Monday.
He was immediately aggressive when spoken to by officers.
He made a gun gesture with his hand and threatened to shoot the members before pointing a knife at them, saying he would stab them.
A second unit was called to the scene and he ran away from the area.
They managed to contain the man, aged about 50.
He threw punches towards police, who used capsicum spray with little effect.
The man had to be tasered before being handcuffed.
Police are treating the matter as a mental health issue and the man is yet to be questioned or charged.
He had been taken to hospital for treatment.
Acting Senior Sergeant Shane Bannerman said it was a "dynamic incident" which had thankfully resolved without serious injuries.

"Our focus with this matter is his mental health," he said.
"Early indications are he was having a mental health episode.
"He was quite aggressive.
"It was a fairly volatile situation which could have gotten out of hand."
He will be interviewed at a later date.
Acting Senior Sergeant Bannerman said five police on night shift had been involved in the incident and arrest.
"It could have been a different incident if it occurred in a busy street," he said.
"Our members did a great job and didn't get injured with is our main priority.
"Our focus now is on his treatment and his mental health."
