Newton has lodged a clearance to join Payneham Norwood Union in the wake of the Ovens and Murray being forced to abandon its season.

The Adelaide Football league club is coached by Jace Bode who Newton played alongside at both Melbourne and Norwood.

Payneham Norwood Union are the defending premiers.

Newton intends to fly to Adelaide on weekends to play.

The star forward said he was unsure how many matches he would play with the South Australian border closed to Victorians due to the coronavirus.

"I'm not moving over there or anything, I just plan to play a few games if the government eases restrictions," Newton said.

"My body is feeling the best it has in five or six years.

"I had a year off cricket over the summer and with no footy so far I haven't played sport for nine months except for a couple of matches in Darwin."

Newton said his phone had been running hot since the O&M made its gut-wrenching decision to cancel the season.

"I've got a few mates who are playing in Queensland and Mornington who got in contact to see if I would be interested in having a kick," he said.

"Jace is one of my good mates and half the Payneham Norwood Union is made up of former Norwood players who I already know.

"So I'm just going over there for a bit of fun and not planning to play too many games.

"The standard is a lot lower to O&M but it is still reasonable.

"They won the flag last year."

Newton said Wangaratta will not stand in the way of any player who wishes to switch leagues.

"The club has basically given the players the green light to go and play with mates in other leagues with the new COVID-19 permit," he said.

"If the Picola league goes ahead I expect a few teammates might play there.

"I would have loved for the O&M season to go ahead but it is what it is.

"I think the best decision has been made overall."

Newton, 33, has played more than 50 matches with the Magpies and said he had set his sights on playing at least 100.
