NPL fixtures for Murray United's junior sides are set to resume this weekend with Whittlesea Ranges travelling up to Wodonga to the face the Border club.

Albury-Wodonga Soccer Referees Association president Andrew Nicholls said they are "cautiously waiting" whether the round will go ahead given the surge in Melbourne coronavirus cases in recent days.

"At the end of the day, we support any decisions by the local competitions and we'll take direction from Football Victoria about what's going on," Nicholls said.

Concerns had been raised as to whether the referees involved in NPL fixtures on a Saturday would put the community at risk if they went onto to officiate AWFA matches on a Sunday, but Nicholls rubbished those claims.

"Those sort of things get floated around, but you've got to look at that seriously," Nicholls said.

"Who knows where any member of a Wodonga-based club or outside has been. I'm not saying it will happen, but you could have someone from Wangaratta that goes down on business in Melbourne.

"To pinpoint anyone in particular that would bring it across is a long bow."

If fixtures on the Border are limited, Nicholls said referees could explore options in other competitions.

"Each referee has the right to referee or not referee," he added.
