Detectives last week launched an appeal for information, asking anyone who knew about the incident, which took place in Melbourne in September 2016, to come forward.
The Border Mail now understands the ongoing police investigation is focused on celebrations for Glenrowan Football Club.
The club went into recess for the 2020 season, due to a severe player shortage and financial pressures, but was a powerhouse in the Ovens and King Football League four years ago.
The 2016 premiership was the footy team's third win in a row, easily beating Tarrawingee by 64 points, and they would go on to win the 2017 flag as well.
It was during a party after the 2016 win that a 26-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted.
IN OTHER NEWS:
She attended a party at a house in Yarraville, near Footscray, with about 15 people.
The woman complained of feeling unwell after drinking a glass of orange juice and was taken to a bedroom.
She woke the next day with injuries consistent with being sexually assaulted and immediately left.
The party was not a sanctioned event run by Glenrowan Football Club.
The incident was reported to police in in December 2018, but no one has been questioned or charged.
Police are confident people at the Yarraville party would know the incident they are referring to and could provide information to help the investigation.
Anyone wishing to provide details can attend their local police station or anonymously call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
