Many businesses have traditionally relied on face-to-face contact as a key method of communication.
However, with the COVID-19 pandemic, this approach is no longer viable all the time and businesses are now forced to look for alternatives.
One such alternative is video conferencing, alternatively known as web conferencing.
Simply, this is where you use a computer, tablet or smartphone to make calls with video and audio at the same time.
While this technology may have seemed clunky and impractical when it was first introduced many years ago, the technology has now evolved to the point where it is very practical and user-friendly for all people of all ages.
COVID-19 has seen an explosion in the use of video conferencing, which has been facilitated by increased levels of user-friendliness.
Inexperienced users need only click on a link in a meeting invitation rather than having to download, install and configure an app on their device.
In these instances, the user only needs a webcam and a microphone (already built into most modern devices) as well as an email address, which has allowed even novice users of technology to participate in these forums.
COVID-19 has seen an explosion in the use of video conferencing ...
Video conferencing technology is suitable for one-on-one interactions and it can also be used for group meetings, either for a presentation from a small number of people to a large group, or as a group discussion with many of the parties contributing and interacting simultaneously.
While Skype was the breakthrough video conferencing app from the 2000s, there is now a wide range of mainstream apps available including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, GoTo Meeting and others, all of which have their own strengths and weaknesses.
Meeting organisers can access free versions of the apps, sometimes with restrictions such as maximum meeting lengths, or alternatively they can pay a licence fee and access the full versions and all the features they offer.
