Indian police say Puneet had run away with his married girlfriend after selling his car for about $A8000, despite an ongoing extradition trial.
Panchkula Police Inspector Joginder Singh told AAP they were trying to locate Puneet based on scant information provided by his father when he turned up at the police station on Wednesday.
"They ran off to Gurgaon (out the outskirts of the Indian capital). When the money ran out, he came back. He turned up here with his father, who had filed a missing person's complaint. He didn't have much to say for himself," Mr Singh said.
He added that Puneet's life seemed to be in shambles.
"His wife has left him because of the girlfriend, the girlfriend has left him and his father seems fed up with everything.
"It's obvious that he is disturbed because he knows for certain that he will eventually have to face his punishment in Australia. He knows that," said Singh.
Police are taking no action against him.
Puneet's escapade is the latest in a string of bizarre incidents that have characterised his behaviour and the extradition trial in India since 2008, when he killed 19-year-old pedestrian Dean Hofstee and seriously injured his friend Clancy Coker while speeding in Melbourne.
He fled to India on a friend's passport while on bail before his sentencing in Victoria.
Since then, Australia has been trying to have him sent back but the trial in New Delhi has been meandering for years through the Indian legal system.
There are currently 30 million cases pending in the courts, a figure that will have only increased since the courts shut months ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Over the years his lawyers have variously claimed he will face racism in Australia if he returns, that he suffers from schizophrenia (a claim refuted by Indian doctors), kidney problems and suicidal tendencies.
Puneet has turned up in court with a bandaged head, a surgical mask, propped up by relatives as though unable to walk, and in a wheelchair.
Indian doctors eventually judged him fit to be extradited, a conclusion accepted by the judge at the New Delhi court.
The trial is winding its way very slowly towards a verdict but the courts in India are still closed because of the pandemic, hearing only urgent matters online.
No date has been set for the next hearing.
