And Albury's top cop is warning drivers to do the right thing as wait times could return to close to two hours as seen on the first day of the border closure.

"I am anticipating we are going to have significant delays, at our busy checkpoints including the Hume Freeway and Wodonga Place," Murray River Police District commander Superintendent Paul Smith said.

"Please do not try and cross if you don't have a valid permit.

"The movement of traffic over the last 24 hours is up about 20 per cent in Albury Wodonga.

Superintendent Smith said if drivers try and enter NSW without a valid permit, they will be turned away.

"If someone is pulled up at a checkpoint and they have their ID and a valid permit the process is quite straight forward," he said.

"But if they don't there will be some delay for that whole line. You can help by not travelling if you don't have to, avoid peak times and have a valid permit and ID ready to go.

"We have turned around about 300 or so vehicles at the checkpoints but general compliance has been really good - we know this is going to be a huge impact on our border communities but we are going to have to work with it.

"Don't try and dodge it, don't try and wait until it goes away, work with it and we are going to have to make it work as best we can."

Member for Albury Justin Clancy said employment was "critical" for the community and was something he has raised with NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian.

"If you are in a border community you do have the ability to travel for employment but there will be people impacted who fall outside that area," he said.
