A Wangaratta resident who tested positive for COVID-19 was not tested at the city's major coronavirus clinic.
North East Health Wangaratta, who have undertaken the majority of COVID-19 testing in the region, told The Border Mail they were not aware of the case.
Interim Chief Executive Tim Griffiths said the positive case did not come through their clinic or in-patient facilities.
He said GPs in the region had been testing for COVID-19 and he had reached out to them to find out if the positive case originated through their tests.
Mr Griffiths said it could be a case of a returned traveller or person testing positive in the city, but providing a Wangaratta address.
The Department of Health and Human Services who first reported the active case have not responded to requests to clarify where the resident currently is.
PREVIOUSLY:

The Department has not specified if the infected resident is currently in the rural city or if they have simply listed their residential address as Wangaratta.
It comes as Victoria recorded 403 new cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours and five deaths.
Earlier today, Premier Daniel Andrews said roughly 370 of the new cases were based in Melbourne or Mitchell Shire and 13 were in regional Victoria. He said the remaining cases were still being investigated.
