After the year we are having, the Border deserves a bit of sunshine.
And that is exactly what the 2020 Sunshine Walk is hoping to bring.
Although organisers aren't sure if the November 22 community fundraising event will go ahead in the same form as last year, teams are already pounding the pavement in preparation.
One of the 19 teams that has already signed up is Leitch's Mobile Butchery team.
"We are doing it for our beloved aunt Joy Endresz who is in the final stages of treatment at the regional cancer centre," team captain Bec Leitch said.
For Bec and her sister Melissa Kennedy, the Sunshine Walk is an opportunity to honour their aunt and "try and do something to help".
Mrs Endrez, 57, has been receiving treatment since November at the Albury-Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre and will be going into palliative care treatment in the coming weeks.
"You just feel so helpless and if I can raise awareness and funds for our local treatment centre than maybe one day we will win the fight against cancer," Bec said.
"Or at least give others the opportunity to be treated locally and close to family and friends."
"It's a really good cause so I encourage you to jump on board.
"It's only 20km at the end of the day when people who are actually being treated at the facility are going through much worse."
IN OTHER NEWS:
Bec will also walk for family friend, Ken Lacey, who last year received care at the cancer centre for lung cancer and is now receiving treatment for a brain tumour.
"Whether it goes ahead as it did last year or it is virtual or whatever, it is a really important event and something we should all be involved in," Bec said.
"Last year my sister and I ran the first 10 kilometres and walked the next 10 kilometres and we really enjoyed it.
"Joy had just been diagnosed so it was something, is something, really close to our hearts."
The Leitch's Mobile Butchery team is holding a raffle to be drawn on the day and has been supported by multiple local businesses.
The major prize is a Thermomix TM6 valued at $2269 and second prize a BBQ pack worth $580.
For tickets contact Bec 0429 977 641 or Melissa 0400 911 929. The raffle will be drawn at 5pm on November 22.
The team is hoping to raise $5000 to donate to the cancer centre.
