And a small group of St Paul's College Walla agriculture students are keeping up with that changing landscape by holding their first virtual beef judging competition for schools across the country.
Livestock Show team manager Emma Finemore said students have to keep up with the reality of today's industry.

"Students all over the country are missing out due to current circumstances," she said.
"Online auctions are growing in popularity in the agriculture industry and being able to pick an animal from a computer screen is now the reality of todays ag.
"Schools from all over Australia have registered their interest, allowing students the opportunity to compete against a new set of competitors."
The students will be given videos of the cattle to watch and judge on August 20 and will have two weeks to judge the cattle, have score cards and judging videos together.
"Entries open Monday 3rd of August and close 17th of August, but spots are going to fill quickly so register your schools' interest to me before then," Miss Finemore said.
