An elderly man has been taken to hospital after an intruder assaulted him with a tomahawk while he slept in Albury on Saturday.
NSW Police said a 72-year-old man was asleep in his Grafton Street home when he awoke to see a man armed with a tomahawk standing near his bed.
The man threatened him and demanded he hand over car keys.
A second man armed with a hammer entered the room and police said a physical altercation occurred.

The man's 77-year-old wife was asleep in a separate room and was able to call police. She was not injured.
The two men fled the house empty-handed.
The injured man was taken to Albury Base Hospital for treatment and remains in a stable condition.
A crime scene was established and police canvassed the area.
Detectives from Murray River Police District have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
