Detective Acting Inspector Troy Martin said on Monday the victim received minor lacerations to his hand and forehead and had since been released from hospital.
A second man armed with a hammer entered the room and a physical altercation took place.
The man's wife, 77, who was in another bedroom and was not injured, was able to call police and the two men fled the house empty-handed.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Acting Inspector Martin confirmed the victim did fight back.
"Yes, he did," the officer said.
"Obviously given his age, he did whatever he could.
"Very brave ... being in bed and people entering your bedroom, armed with weapons, making demands, the victim in this matter has done an amazing job, called for the assistance of his wife and ... given the injuries he's sustained, he's very lucky."
Police are still investigating how the intruders, who wore face coverings, entered the house and asked anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
"We've been constantly calling for members of the public to always make sure that all valuables are (removed) from vehicles, your cars are locked, keep your car keys, keep your wallets in different parts of the house to try and stop this type of offending," Acting Inspector Martin said.
"But in this particular case an elderly gentleman was in bed and a number of persons have entered and made these demands, which is quite concerning, yes."
