Pet insurance Australia has drawn on its data to rank the top 20 breeds for 2020, beginning with the cavoodle.
The cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a poodle has become increasingly popular during the past decade.
Cavoodles, including Liza Hill's dog Mocco, are also now a familiar sight at The Dog Education Centre in Wodonga.
"I thought they might be top five, because I have seen they've gotten expensive - they are obviously in demand - but number one is pretty cool," Ms Hill said, at last week's release of the list.
"They're very affectionate - Mocco thinks she's a person, and she's very intelligent; you don't ever teach her something as a joke.
"I originally wanted a West Highland White Terrier, but that was a two-year wait list, so I went with a cavoodle and it was the best thing I ever did."
When Ms Hill first began researching dog breeds nearly 10 years ago - she lived in Melbourne and was about to move back to the border - the cavoodle was mentioned on a television show.
"They were just coming onto the radar then," she said.
"I wanted a dog that didn't shed its coat, and was low-maintenance; they only need as much exercise as you're prepared to give them.
"I did research and that's why I picked her, and there's waiting lists now - I say I have a cavoodle and people know what I'm talking about."
IN OTHER NEWS:
Ms Hill's puppy, dubbed Mocco by her father, "because it looked like warped moccasins", was welcomed into the family.
"It was a cute nickname, and she was a slipper-stealer, so it was meant to be," she said.
Mocco attends day care at The Dog Education Centre, and dog trainer Sara Fairley said she was a joy.
"There are a few cavoodle friends - and we see a lot of French bulldogs and staffies," she said.
The Maltese Cross, Labrador, Staffordshire Bull Terrior, golden retriever, border collie, German Shepherd, French Bulldog, kelpie cross and labradoodle rounded out Pet Insurance Australia's top 10.
