The 72-year-old Albury man has returned home from hospital after Saturday's ordeal.
He received a broken nose, blade wound to his right hand and cuts and bruising to his face, arm and body after being hit by a hammer and tomahawk.
After being struck with the weapons by the two intruders in his Grafton Street home, the pair punched and kicked the Vietnam War veteran as he laid in bed.
He refused to hand over the keys to his white Nissan X-Trail despite the pair's demands.
His wife screamed at the home invaders as the incident unfolded.

Despite the ordeal, the man told The Border Mail he would stick up for himself again.
The pair ultimately left empty handed but smashed up the X-Trail and a neighbour's vehicle as they fled east towards Sackville Street.
Police are yet to make arrested and have appealed for information.
The victim, who asked not to be named, found the weapon partially hidden outside his house on Monday.
"I hope they get the bastards," he said.
"If I could do it all over again, I think I'd still do the same thing.
"I think they said once we've finished using your car, we'll well and truly torch it so you can get the insurance."
The 72-year-old didn't get much of a look at the pair as they had hoodies and masks.
When asked what went through his mind during the early morning ordeal, he said "nothing'".
"I was too busy protecting myself," the man said.
He was first hit with the tomahawk, which he grabbed and held onto, before the second person hit him with the hammer, followed by punches and kicks.
"I think the fact that I wasn't giving into them, and my wife came out of her room and started screaming at them, they decided they best get out of the way," the victim said.
