Firefighters were called to Gilbert Street at 4.30am on Tuesday as the deliberate fire burnt a Ford in a driveway.
They managed to quickly extinguish the blaze and police yesterday seized several pieces of evidence from the scene.
"We believe either the vehicle in question that was at the address in Gilbert Street or the occupants are the target," Detective Sergeant Graeme Simpfendorfer said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"It's quite clear to us that this is a deliberate and targeted attack."
A different Ford parked at a bus stop on Pearce Street, which had a tyre changed, may be linked to the incident.
Police are keen to speak to anyone who saw the car near Melrose Drive.
"People that start these fires have got to be held responsible for their actions," the detective said.
"The vehicle was quite close to the house."
