A Rutherglen man has been arrested and charged over claims he tried to cross the border into NSW with a knife, cash and drug paraphernalia.

NSW Police said officers from Operation Border Closure were working at the Wodonga Place checkpoint when they stopped a Holden Captiva on Tuesday about 6pm.
Officers spoke to the 36-year-old Rutherglen, who produced a permit but was not able to provide any documentation or evidence to show what essential work he would be conducting in NSW.

Police alleged the man became aggressive when he was questioned further and refused to cooperate.
They claimed the man wound his window up and attempted to drive off before officers were able to stop the vehicle and that he refused to get out or comply with police directions.
Police said additional officers came to assist and the man opened the driver's door and was arrested.
During a subsequent search of the man and his vehicle, police allegedly located a knife, $1600 in cash, and a bag containing items "consistent with the supply of illicit drugs".
The Rutherglen man was taken to Albury police station, where he was charged with not complying with noticed direction regarding COVID 19, goods in custody and having custody of a knife in a public place.
He was granted strict conditional bail to appear in Albury Local Court on September 21, then returned to Victoria.
