A drunk man armed with a small axe in central Wodonga came close to being tasered after threatening police and repeatedly refusing to drop the weapon.

Brody Crompton appeared before court this week following the armed incident, and several other offences, last September.
Crompton used the silver axe to smash a window at First Choice Liquor in Elgin Boulevard about 2.15am on September 21.
He reached in and grabbed two bottles of Bundaberg Rum before heading towards High Street.
Crompton got to the main intersection, staggering on the footpath, and was spotted by police.
He raised the axe and stepped forward as he was told to drop it.
He threatened police a second time and turned to walk away before putting down a bottle of the rum while police continually told him to drop the weapon.

Crompton again threatened police but became compliant when they said he would be tasered.
He was arrested and held in the police cells until he sobered up.
Crompton stole credit cards from a man's utility a day earlier which he used to by spirits and a phone, and unsuccessfully used the cards in a bid to buy other items.
He also stole a ski jacket from Aldi last June by walking through the checkout and refusing to stop.
Lawyer Mario Vaccaro said the 24-year-old has been doing well since moving in with his father in Chiltern.
He had worked at the Wodonga Abattoir but lost his job due to his ice use.
Crompton was also admitted to Nolan House in April but has stabilised through medication.
Magistrate Ian Watkins imposed a 12-month community corrections order with 60 hours of unpaid work.
