Acting Chief Medical officer Paul Kelly this week provided his advice to the Prime Minister, saying he was concerned the coronavirus numbers in Victoria were not improving.

"The travel of members and senators from Victoria to the ACT at this time presents a significant risk to ACT residents, particularly those who work in Parliament House," he said in a letter.

"It also presents a significant risk for members and senators and their staff from other jurisdictions, with the possibility of seeding into other jurisdictions."

His preference was for the isolation to occur in the ACT, but said he would accept isolation in Victoria as long as members adhered to strict conditions such as nobody from the household leaving home, no visitors and conducting a COVID-19 test on day 12.

Mr Kelly did not differentiate between MPs in Melbourne and regional areas.

Dr Haines lives in Wangaratta where there are no active coronavirus cases.

She said she would isolate at home starting from Saturday, to allow herself two weeks before driving up to Canberra for the next sitting day.

"An an independent, I feel my electorate needs representation in Canberra and I'm it, so I'll take the two weeks quarantine and then go," she said.

MPs and senators were told of the need to isolate on Thursday, giving them and their partners just one day to organise themselves for the next two weeks.

"We'll be stocking up and getting organised (on Friday)," Dr Haines said.

"It was very sudden news."

Her appointments had been changed to Zoom meetings when regional Victoria went into stage three lockdown, so she will continue working from home, but will not be seen in the community.

Liberal Senator Jane Hume, who lives in Melbourne but is the party's Indi representative, confirmed yesterday she would go through the 14 days of isolation before attending Parliament later in the month.

She was yet to decide whether to isolate in Victoria or Canberra.
