Muller only turned 24 last weekend and admitted he struggled to manage the heavy commitments of coaching the Hoppers with his own fitness.

Raiders' mentor Jarrod Hodgkin was also in his first year in the job, but he succeeded, individually, like few have before him, winning the Morris Medal.

"'Hodgy's' got quite a similar story to myself I suppose and he's been very supportive of me as a young coach going through the same sort of issues, but with him having a bit more of a mature head," Muller explained.

"He's also transitioning from one Ovens and Murray club to another and he played down in the Northern Football League as well."

Hodgkin won a premiership at Heidelberg, while Muller claimed a flag at Bundoora in 2017.

Hodgkin returned to former club Wodonga when he moved back, but joined Raiders in 2018.

The 28-year-old is one of four players in their 20s set to coach next year, including Yarrawonga's Mark Whiley (27), Wangaratta Rovers' co-coach Jamason Daniels (29) and Myrtleford's Jake Sharp (25).

"It's pretty well known that I've got a really strong relationship with Jake Sharp and 'Hodgy's' a parallel with him in terms of support over the past two years," Muller said.

"To have that level of support has been really helpful and definitely it's weighed in on my decision to join Raiders."
