Detective Sergeant Graeme Simpfendorfer said the stolen utility was found in the northern Victorian city town and five people arrested after a short chase on foot.
He thanked the public for their assistance.
UPDATE: A man and woman were attacked at a Barnawartha property and a utility stolen from the scene, police have confirmed.
Wodonga detectives continue to search for the stolen Nissan Navara utility following the incident on Friday morning.
A second vehicle has been recovered.
Police were alerted to the incident about 10.40am.
Investigators believe two men attended the Plunketts Road property and attacked the pair before stealing the man's utility.
They believe the offenders fled and were joined by two or three other men, who are thought to have travelled to the area in a Holden stolen in Yarrawonga overnight.
The white Commodore was found dumped on the Hume Freeway near the crime scene a short time after the assault.
A search is continuing.
Anyone with information should call Triple-0 immediately.
Members of the public are warned not to approach the stolen ute, which had a black tarp and hay in the tray.
It also has a large aerial attached the bullbar, near the passenger side of the vehicle.
EARLIER: Police are seeking urgent assistance to find a vehicle stolen from Barnawartha on Friday morning, and urge people not to approach the car.
The silver or grey Nissan Navara dual cab utility was stolen about 10.40am.
The 2003 model vehicle has blue and white number plates 1JS7ZP.
It also has a large UHF aerial on a bullbar, on the passenger side of the vehicle.
"Do not approach the vehicle," a spokesman said.
"Call 000 if sighted immediately."
The incident may have links to Wodonga, Shepparton and Yarrawonga.
