The NSW Regional Open series was to stage six events, culminating in a Border tournament on a date and venue to be fixed, again due to coronavirus concerns.

However, with COVID-19 transmission evident throughout the community, Golf NSW and the PGA of Australia have made the difficult decision to reschedule the tournaments, which were scheduled to start late this month.

The decision was taken to protect both players and the regional communities around the host clubs from any possible transmission.

Both the PGA and Golf NSW believe it would be problematic to have athletes from interstate and metropolitan centres travelling across regional NSW, much of which is predominantly COVID-19 free.

"We appreciate this decision will be disappointing news to many. However, remain assured we are working closely with all the stakeholders concerned to ensure the tournaments are rescheduled (COVID permitting) as soon as possible," general manager of golf at Golf NSW Graeme Phillipson said.

The top three players in the six events, either professionals or amateurs, would qualify for the NSW Open, also later this year.

Each event was worth $50,000 and were expected to attract quality fields.

IN OTHER MATCHES

With COVID clouding future dates, an amended schedule will be determined and Golf NSW will contact amateur entrants to outline future developments.

The series was to be the second major event on the Border, but the NSW Senior Open, scheduled for Thurgoona Country Club Resort, was also rescheduled on Monday..
