The Kiewa Valley Highway crash was discovered about 8.45am yesterday but police were still investigating when the incident occurred.
Sergeant Cameron Roberts, of Wodonga Highway Patrol, said the vehicle had ended up two-thirds down the hill and not visible from the road.
"It's in an area where you've got to have your wits about you and that area is unforgiving of mistakes," he said.
State Emergency Service, Country Fire Authority and Ambulance Victoria also assisted in the challenging recovery operation.
In a separate incident, a truck rolled over on the Murray Valley Highway at Bullioh early yesterday morning and lost its load of pine logs.
Senior Constable Adam Niksic, of Tallangatta Police, said the 49-year-old male driver from Myrtleford received only minor injuries.
The crash occurred about 1am, with one highway lane closed for about four hours as SES volunteers helped clear the road.
11.30am: A man died when his car left the road at Kergunyah South and struck a tree on Tuesday morning.
Victoria Police said the car was discovered about 8.45am but it was unclear when the collision occurred.
"It is believed a car was travelling north on the Kiewa Valley Highway when it left the roadway, struck a tree and rolled down an embankment," a police spokesman said.
The male driver and sole occupant of the car, who is yet to be formally identified, died before emergency services arrived.
Police remain at the scene and anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
EARLIER: Emergency services are responding to a serious car crash at Kergunyah South on Tuesday morning.
A Victoria Police spokesman said the single-vehicle crash occurred about 8.45am on the Kiewa Valley Highway.
The car had one occupant.
Kiewa Valley Highway has been closed at Kergunyah and traffic diversions are in place. The crash site is north of Besley Lane.
Eleven emergency vehicles, including police, ambulance and Country Fire Authority crews, initially headed to the scene.
