He suffered the injury in the final contest of last Sunday's AFL Riverina Championship sudden death semi-final win against Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes.
The 19-year-old was set to have the operation in Wagga on Monday, but was sent home.
An opportunity then arose to have the surgery in Albury on Tuesday, so the Murray family decided to have it as quickly as possible.
"The nurse said, 'it's a good one' and I was hoping that meant the news wasn't as bad, but it was the other way and it was a really bad one," Murray said from hospital Wednesday morning before leaving shortly after.

Murray's Ganmain Grong Grong Matong will face Leeton Whitton in Saturday's preliminary final.
"We have a lot of momentum from the last four weeks and I definitely think we can rock it (challenge for the flag)," Murray said.
