A lifeline has been thrown to Kiewa Valley Kindergarten, which is now eligible for the Victorian government's free kinder scheme after originally missing out.

The centre, a locally-owned and run kindergarten service in Tangambalanga, was under threat of closure because it fell into a loophole designed to stop long daycare providers accessing the state funding.
Owner Jane Elkington had said parents were left angry when they were invoiced for term 3, while families at other centres were covered by the free kinder program.
But the government has now guaranteed their funding for terms two and three.

Northern Victoria MP Tania Maxwell raised the issue with Education Minister James Merlino and said on Thursday she was pleased the government had finally listened to reason.
"Small towns like Tangambalanga and the Elkington family work hard to provide a necessary service for their community and I was more than happy to advocate on their behalf to receive the same funding support as metropolitan kindergartens," she said.
"This news is a huge relief to this small community and will be warmly welcomed by parents."
