And that's exactly what he's done this year.
48-year-old Hamilton is enjoying competing in his very first hockey season playing in the Hockey Albury-Wodonga new-look eights competition.
But he's not a new face around the hockey community, having been a long-time supporter of wife Narelle and kids Jayden, Taryn and Brodie, who are all members of the Falcons.
Hamilton said his family, as well as having more free time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, led to his decision to join.
He's now enjoying trying his hand at the sport and has even scored several goals against his wife's team.
"It was certainly a gloatable moment," he said.
"I've been around the hockey club for quite a while and I've got all the Falcons' merchandise.
"The competition is great, I'm loving it, and can't wait to play a proper season next season."
He admitted his family has been giving him a few pointers for his debut, particularly son Brodie, who trains with the Spitfires.
"Before the second lockdown we were doing lots of practice out the back," Hamilton said.
"It seems funny that I have all of his hand-me-down equipment to play with.
"Every time my kids or family sees me doing something I could improve on they always help me out.
"There's more than enough support from other players."
ALSO IN SPORT:
Hamilton has impressed so far and has now been asked to also join in with a mid-week veterans competition.
Narelle has been with the Falcons since 2001 and admitted it's been great to see her family take to the field over the years.
She's also enjoyed periods playing alongside her daughters Taryn and Jayden.
"I said I taught them everything they know, but they said I taught them everything not to do," she said.
"I love it because it's really family orientated.
"It's a sport you can play with your whole family."
The Hockey Albury-Wodonga season has only been played north of the border this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The Hamiltons agreed it's been great to see some form of competition run, in a time when sport has become a casualty due to the threat of the virus.
"Everybody's just really happy to be out there playing," Narelle said.
"It's been really positive seeing the clubs mixing."
This weekend marks the fifth round of the modified competition.
Orange is still in the lead in the premier men's division and will take on second placed Grey.
The other match will see Black and Red collide in an attempt to stay off the bottom of the ladder.
In the women's premier division, yellow take on Blue, while Grey will meet Pink.
Yellow and Grey both have three wins to their names so far, while Blue and Pink have picked up a single victory each.
