As luck would have it Osborne's move into the AFL Riverina Championship left the door open for Hugo to join the Ostriches, having a long-time friend already at the club.
However, the Narrandera born goal shooter never imagined she'd walk away with her first league best and fairest medal after being crowned equal winner alongside young defender Vashti Muller.
"I was a little surprised, I wasn't really expecting it," Hugo said.
"Because I juggle basketball and netball I never expect to poll well in those sorts of things."
Hugo was unable to play basketball this year for Wagga in the division two state league due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I took the whole year off to give myself enough time," she said.
"That's another reason I didn't want to have another year off.
"I just did that, I was ready to go."
Osborne coach Liza Gooden said Hugo fit into the team well, with her strength in the circle her biggest asset.
"We've loved having her as part of the team and she's a great target in the goal circle," Gooden said.
"Her shooting average this year has been over 80 per cent every week, she's played fantastic."
Hugo admitted it's unlikely she'll return to the court for Osborne next season due to basketball commitments.
Osborne's A-grade side went down to Wagga Tigers in the preliminary final, but the club still has a shot at flags this weekend with B-grade and under-17's playing off in the deciders.
The Ostriches will meet Turvey Park in the B-grade grand final, while the under-17s take on Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong.
The Hume league club also has their under-17 football side in the mix for premiership glory, taking on Leeton-Whitton on Saturday.
