Bright Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll said there had been a 30 per cent increase in Alpine crashes the last time COVID-19 restrictions were eased.
"We are expecting a lot of people in the area," he said.
"There will be the highest amount of traffic on the road for some time.
"People just need to be patient and to take their time while driving.

Senior Sergeant Incoll said people also needed to understand restrictions to avoid being fined, with police checking compliance at venues.
Those at pubs and other eateries must abide by mask, distancing, and capacity rules.
