Sir Angus Houston will be in town on Friday in the first visit to the Murray region by the former Australian Defence Force Air Chief Marshal since taking up the position in August.

In a statement the MDBA said his main purpose would be to "see the country and start to meet people involved in water use and management, including local industry representatives, individual farmers and local government".

His visit comes after speaking at the MDBA national conference earlier this month where he said his new job was a "tough gig".

"I will do my best to be part of the solution to water policy across communities and governments," he said at the conference.

"To give the rivers what they need and strong communities what they need."

Sir Angus is expected to meet with a number of peak irrigation and agricultural bodies, including Murray Irrigation, Speak Up Campaign, Murray Regional Strategy Group and Southern Riverina Irrigators.

He is also expected to host a number of formal and information meetings and see irrigation infrastructure in action while in the Murray and Riverina region.

It is expected he will also visit Deniliquin during the tour.

Murray Irrigation chief Philip Endley said the visit would be a good opportunity to showcase the region and to highlight some of the challenges faced by local farmers.

''We need to restore certainty for water and see reforms introduced to ensure sustainability,'' he said.
