Dwayne Jon Goward's lawyer says the alleged victim's description of the person involved in the July 2 incident doesn't match his client.
The 33-year-old, who is in custody at Junee, recently sought bail in Albury Local Court.
He is facing three charges, including assault with intent to rob while armed with an offence weapon, and having his face blackened or disguised.
Goward allegedly held a knife and threatened to stab the woman on Selle Lane, but she fought back and forced him to flee as she chased him.
The 33-year-old and his father-in-law were arrested the following day at the Fountain Court Motor Inn, with the court told two hunting knives, drugs and cash were found.
The court heard DNA was found on the knives.
About $7000 was found on Goward and a further $700 in the room.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Albury Local Court heard the woman's description was of someone completely different to the 135 kilogram six foot one man.
She described the person responsible as being much shorter, Goward's lawyer said.
Lawyer Ben Hart said Goward's father in law, Darren Cook, had withdrawn the cash found at the motel room from his superannuation to buy a car but the sale hadn't gone ahead.
He said there was a lawful excuse for the money, and alibi evidence that the pair had left Albury before the incident.
Mr Hart said the victim described someone much shorter than her and far leaner than his client, and said he could offer a $5000 surety for bail.
"He needs to be at liberty to prepare his defence," the lawyer said, noting that that would be hard to do from custody.
Mr Hart said his client would need to provide bank and phone records and said no DNA or fingerprint evidence had been served.
But magistrate Richard Funston said he was concerned Goward would fail to appear.
"I'm not going to grant Mr Goward bail today," he said.
"The allegations before the court today are just so serious."
While a rehab bed was available, the magistrate said that wasn't enough to grant bail.
The matter will return to court on Tuesday.
