Further details of the incident, which killed 63-year-old Rex Martin on March 28 last year, have emerged after truck driver Jamie William Egan's guilty plea in Albury Local Court.

Witnesses to the Hume Highway collision tried to save Mr Martin after his Mazda utility came to a rest on its roof while alight at Mullengandra.

Other motorists had stopped in a bid to assist but the utility was engulfed by flames, the heat preventing them from getting too close.

The late man had to be identified by his fingerprints.

In facts released by the court on Tuesday, forensic pharmacologist Judith Perl said there would have been "significant impairment of (Egan's) driving ability" due to his ice use.

The results of drug tests suggested the 48-year-old had used a short time before the crash, most likely four to six hours earlier.

Police found two small bags of ice in Egan's sunglasses case, weighing 1.36 grams.

The Kenworth driver had been closing the gap between his vehicle and Mr Martin's Mazda utility, which was towing a Morris Minor on a trailer.

Dashcam footage showed the truck approaching the trailer in the northbound lanes at Mullengandra about 8.20pm.

Egan pulled the truck to the right at the point where a crash was imminent, but the Kenworth struck the trailer.

The impact forced the Mazda to to veer right and roll in front of the truck, with the ute's trailer dragged behind.

The prime mover hit a concrete barrier, causing the truck's trailers to fall off the Sweetwater Creek Bridge.

Egan was airlifted to hospital and stayed for four nights.

A blood test at the hospital showed he had methamphetamine, amphetamine and morphine in his system.

He was arrested on July 17 last year and claimed the late man's vehicle came "out of nowhere".

He said he hadn't used drugs in the 24 hours before the crash, but told a drug and alcohol service he had used on the day.

Egan, who is in custody at Bathurst, will return to Albury District Court on November 27.
