The news was confirmed to The Border Mail by friends of the former Ovens and Murray footballer who said the young man died while in Italy.
Ryan won the Ovens and Murray Football League's best and fairest award in 2008, claiming a 10-vote win.
The tough midfielder played for Corowa-Rutherglen in 2007-08.
Details of how the enormously popular Ryan died are yet to be confirmed. His family have been notified.
