McNay's entry in the commentary, analysis, opinion and critique category has been selected among the three to be considered for the accolade.
Former Border Mail scribe Tony Wright is also a finalist in the category, for his work published by The Age, along with Ranjana Srivastava, of The Guardian Australia.
The Walkley Foundation received more than 1400 entries for the awards, to be presented on November 20.

Acting editor Julie Coe said the achievement was significant in a year of unprecedented challenges.
