Zainab Abdirahman-Khalif was arrested at Adelaide Airport in 2016 trying to board a plane to Turkey with a one-way ticket and less than $200.
Extremist propaganda was found on her mobile phone and she later communicated with a woman who carried out a terror attack in Kenya.
Abdirahman-Khalif was eventually found guilty of being an Islamic State member and sentenced to three years in prison.
The conviction was overturned on appeal.
But the original guilty verdict has been reinstated after the federal government won a High Court challenge.
"They've corrected a mistake that was made by justices in South Australia so it's highly appropriate, particularly when you look at the history and the conduct of this woman," Mr Dutton told 2GB radio on Thursday.
"There was no question about her sympathies to ISIS and to committing a terrorist attack, or being involved in groups of people that had that intent."
Abdirahman-Khalif was rearrested on Wednesday and taken to Adelaide Women's Prison.
"The case was pretty clear to us and that's why it had to be appealed to the High Court," Mr Dutton said.
"Common sense has prevailed so we're very grateful for that."
Abdirahman-Khalif is expected to launch an immediate application for parole.
