The Wodonga Magistrates Court this week heard Nicholas Page wasn't the intended target.
Shots were fired at multiple Wodonga homes last month, leading to several arrests.
Lawyer Sally Wilson said it had been "a significant wake-up call regarding what happens when you mix in the wrong circles".
Page had been living a transient lifestyle and was associating with drug users until his recent arrest.
The 28-year-old broke into the Connelly Construction Services site on Footmark Court on September 23 or the early hours of September 24.
He cut a hole in a rear fence and searched the property.
A shipping container lock was forced open, allowing Page to steal an air compressor which was later found abandoned 150 metres away.
IN OTHER NEWS:
It followed a similar incident in March at a business on Midway Court.
Page cut a fence with bolt cutters and entered wearing gloves and a hoodie.
A sensor light activated, causing him to hide briefly, before he removed a battery powered ratchet, screw driver and torch worth $1700 from a truck.
He tried to cut a security screen door at the site's office before leaving through the cut fence.
The court heard he had also tried to sell a stolen refrigerator in March.
Ms Wilson told the court his most recent offending was to get cash to pay for a hotel.
She said transience was a big issue for him, but he returned to people he could connect to - drug users and people who get into trouble.
He will return to court on October 28.
