A Country Fire Authority spokesman said the blaze began in the yard of the Huon-Kiewa Road property, with emergency services called to the scene at 12.21pm.
"It was quickly brought under control, the house got a bit scorched but certainly not seriously damaged in any way, it's still habitable," he said.
Crews from Wodonga, Kiewa and Bonegilla attended the incident, as well as ambulance paramedics who treated the property owner, a man in his 60s, for minor burns.
The CFA spokesman said the fire took only minutes to contain.
"It was before the first fire truck turned up, some bystanders extinguished most of it," he said.
Firefighters remained on the scene for more than an hour.
